Introduction
We are fortunate enough to observe the life of the beach or street dogs and find them mostly happy. Watching them climb out of bed in the morning to greet fellow pack members and exchange a washing programme, a game of tag and check territory. Sleeping in the midday sun to wake refreshed to hunt out dinner. A good life until effected by one of the many problems associated with the freedom of street life.
This is where we step in. Bite wounds become infested with maggots, fractures caused by road accidents heal incorrectly leading to deformity and without vaccination programmes diseases are frequently fatal.
With sterilization, the stray population becomes stable and decreases over time. It also becomes largely non-aggressive. On the other hand, when strays are killed or forcibly removed from an area, new dogs keep arriving, the population continuously multiplies and changes, and thus becomes unstable and aggressive. Our programme is a successful and totally humane scheme of sterilization and inoculation; plus a nick in the ear to show the animal is safe.
It is illegal to kill a stray animal in India, bribery and legal loopholes have allowed the activity to remain commonplace notably Kerala where authorities sweep through. Destruction ranges from the cruel to the horrific. Our aim is education through talks to schools clubs etc.
Daily Life
You will work in the country centre where we are setting up a long term home for terminally ill, old or injured animals in the heart of the tea plantations, hills and elephantine life of Kerala. There are numberous different activities you will become involved in, much of it depending upon the day to day needs you will encounter.
You can also work with our animal ambulance, in Kochi, tending roadside injuries and treating beach and street animals (cows, cats, dogs and occasionally elephants). The ambulance leaves about 0730 to check known cases in beach and street areas; picking up and treating as needed. As we have the only animal ambulance in the state we cover an area of 20 kms . Finish time is flexible. everything is flexible; this is India!!
We occassionally arrange school talks on stray and wild animal awareness issues.
Main case loads-- This past week we received an elephant who damaged his foot during a temple festival, we helped a cow out of a well, an owl on roadside hit by truck ( what was she doing there?) plus the usual cats and dogs, many goats plus a one legged monkey thrown over gate with a kitten ( 4 legs). The case load can be very varied and differs widely form day to day.
Accommodation
A comfortable double en-suite room in our home or a homestay depending of your preference and the availability. We can also arrange a four star hotel at a greater price or basic at less. Fort Kochi is a labyrinth of streets containing all types of restaurants, book shops and entertainment.
