Location: Various locations around Ghana. You can choose where.
Duration: Minimum 2 weeks commitment
Cost: £650 for the first month, £250 for each additional month. Includes airport pickup, 24 hours support, all food and accommodation with a host family (other options available).
Travel: You will be met at Accra international airport by a project representative, and taken to the Project HQ in central Accra. You will be given a 1 day orientation and cultural immersion tour, aswell as a brief language lesson. You will then be taken directly to your project location to commence your placement.
Work: Caring for and playing with local orphans
Introduction
Recently visited by US President Obama (07-2009), Ghana has been heralded as as a shining example of sub-Saharan African democracy and development. It is a culturally vibrant country with much to offer. However there are still many millions living below the poverty line, and the country is greatly dependent upon international aid.
We have links with a number of orphanages throughout Ghana. You can choose where you wish to be placed upon arrival. You will have the opportunity of working in the actual orphanages and working with young children and babies who either are without families or from very deprived backgrounds.
Daily Life
You will work in an orphanage for young children and babies who either are without families or from very deprived backgrounds.
You will assist with the day to day care of the infants and children who are in need of social interaction and stimulation. They would also be expected to help in the general cleaning, cooking and washing for the youngsters.
Some of the children are suffering from HIV AIDS and have been abandoned or are too sick to go to school, you will teach those children at the orphanage.
Accommodation
Accommodation is with a host family and is included in the price.
However you can choose to stay in a hostel, the prices range from around $250 USD a month for a single room ($62.50 a week) to $40 per week if you are prepared to share a room. Food is not normally included in the hostels but they are normally located very near to restaurants or may have a restaurant on site and/or kitchen facilities where the you can do their own cooking. Rooms in houses range from $100-$150 per week depending if food is included or not. If food is not included volunteers should budget about $25 a week for food. Extra Activities
Various tours and expeditions around Ghana can easily be arranged for before or after your placement. You will be offered all information and booking details when in Ghana.
During your free time, many activities can be arranged, such as African dancing classes, djambe, pottery and weaving lessons, and African ‘language courses. The project provider will be happy to arrange this for you.
