Introduction

Bolivia is a landlocked country in South America that borders the countries of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Peru. Located in the beautiful Andes Mountain with highland plateau and lowland plains of the Amazon basin, Bolivia ranges from dense rainforest to snowy mountains.

This project gets you right in with the Aymara and Quechua communities of Cochabamba, where you will be helping give kids from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance at a better start in life. You can choose from working in several different projects, best suited to your skill sets and requirements.

Daily Life

Volunteering in a School and Youth Club

Our project is with a school and afterschool club for around 200 children from disadvantaged families. There are formal school classes that provide a comprehensive education in all major school subjects. The centre also tries to support the children in their personality development and to convey ethical values.

In the mornings, you will be supporting local teachers in the classroom, specifically looking after children who are having trouble understanding their lessons or who simply need a bit more support. Some children may have physical or mental disabilities who need individual attention.

After an induction period, you will be welcome to teach your own class on any subject you feel able to, such as English, drawing/painting, sports or music.

After school is over, you will help at the afterschool club, doing recreational activities with the children and youth such as games, singing, painting and sports. You also support the children with their homework. You can also plan and implement projects and events (for example children’s camps, excursions or project work).

During the holidays from mid-December to the end of January, the centre is closed.

Travel & Accommodation

You will need to fly into Cochabamba airport to start your project. It is possible to get a connecting flight or overnight bus from La Paz or Santa Cruz. Full instructions will be provided on how to reach the project from Cochabamba, where you will be met by project staff.

Accommodation is in a shared house in the centre of Cochabamba. The house offers seven rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, and two shared bathrooms. You will have access to a washing machine and WiFi.

You also have the option to stay with a host family. You will have your own room and share meals with the family. This is a great option to get the most out of your trip, perfecting your Spanish and seeing Bolivia from the inside out.

The price of the room, which include daily expenses such as water, electricity, weekly cleaning of common rooms, linen and internet, varies according to size of the room. For room reservation, a deposit must be paid (one month’s rent), which will be refunded when you move out.
