Introduction

Working in one of the most beautiful natural parks in Cape Verde, this environmental conservation project gives you the opportunity to make an active difference to the environment. You will be educating visitors to the park in English, about the conservation of endangered flora and fauna. You will also monitor special plants and birds, building up your environmental knowledge.

Situated in the Tarrafal region lies the Serra Malagueta; one of the last remaining forest resources within the country. The nature park is situated right in the heart of the region, immersing you in this important ecological and socio-economic area. The park is home to endemic and endangered species and it boasts numerous great hiking tracks.

There are around 124 different species of flora in the park, and 28 of them are endemic. They’re currently being threatened by invasive species which are coming from outside of the park. Just some of the endangered plants you will be protecting include Conyza feae, conyza pannosa and Limonium lobinii.

As well as endangered flora, you will also be protecting endangered fauna. There are 19 different types of birds in the park, eight of which are endangered such as the Cape Verde Warbler. There are also six different species of reptiles in the park, four of which are endemic.

Once your day is done, you have a great opportunity to explore the surrounding area. Don’t forget to take your camera as the scenery in this extraordinary park is truly breathtaking. The mountain gives you some of the best panoramic views over both the north and south of the island. Towards the north of the island, you’ll see the rock formations which were created from the Pico da Antonia volcano eruption nearby.

This is a truly great opportunity to make a difference to the environment, while also learning more about a different culture and way of life.

Daily Life

After your Introduction Week, you will be expected to work Monday through until Friday. There is no strict schedule you will be following. Instead, your daily activities will vary depending upon what is needed on the day.

You will work with the park rangers to conduct awareness programs, as well as build up staff capacity. Additional help with the daily tasks of the park is also included in the project. Tasks may include monitoring birds and plants. You may also help reforest the area and carry out any additional tasks to protect the environment that the coordinator may instruct.

All of the awareness programs are presented in English, so no local language skills are required. These programs also give you the opportunity to interact with visitors while making a difference to the environment.
