This once in a lifetime program takes you out into the South China Sea, on the beautiful island of Donghai. You will be caring for some of China’s most endangered wildlife and spreading awareness of ocean conservation.
Within this one-week conservation programme, you will be helping to take care of turtles and protect local dolphins. The centre is home to approximately 20 disabled turtles, while a separate centre houses healthy turtles that are awaiting release.
You will care for, and discover more about, the five different turtle species living both within the centre and the surrounding South China Sea. These include Leatherback, Green, Loggerhead, Hauxville and Olive Ridley Turtles. Depending upon which time of year you visit, you may be lucky enough to witness turtle eggs hatching. You will get the chance to help escort them safely into the ocean.
The dolphin conservation part of the placement will focus on educating local schools, helping to construct a dolphin museum and rebuilding any damage caused to houses in the annual typhoon. You may even get the chance to see a dolphin from a boat if you’re lucky.
If you love animals, sun and sand, this placement is definitely one for you.
Once you have had breakfast on the first Monday of the placement, you will be transferred to Donghai island. There, you will visit a dolphin and turtle conservation program before stopping to have lunch. In the afternoon, you will be educated about the local area by the staff in dolphin conservation. Then you’ll enjoy a fun BBQ night on the beach.
On the Tuesday, you will be taken out to sea by boat where you will hopefully get to spot dolphins. Afterwards, you will be given the opportunity to fish on the boat. You’ll return to the centre for lunch, then help the local staff in the afternoon to construct the dolphin museum and clean the dustbins on the beach.
On Wednesday, you will continue work on constructing the dolphin museum after breakfast. Then, after lunch you will visit a local school to teach the children about dolphins and what they can do to protect the environment.
Thursday, you’ll be transferred to Naozhou Island after breakfast via public transportation. You’ll enjoy a nice lunch on the island before visiting the turtle conservation centre to help in the afternoon.
Friday, after breakfast you will be given the opportunity to say goodbye to the turtles on the island and simply enjoy a little time before heading back to Zhanjiang after lunch. You’ll be provided a tour of Zhanjiang before sleeping over. You will need to organise your own dinner.
