This project gives you the opportunity to use your skills to help children living in impoverished areas of Colombia. Assisting teachers in primary or secondary schools, you’ll have the chance to tackle numerous subjects and inject fun into the classroom.
Situated in Cartagena, the placements will always be within 30 minutes of your accommodation. Your role will be to help wherever you can as requested by the local staff. You are encouraged to bring creativity into the classroom, using methods such as role-play, games, plays and songs. This creativity will go a long way to helping the children of Cartagena to broaden their learning experience.
You could end up teaching numerous subjects from music to English and martial arts to mathematics. Music lessons are a little different in Cartagena. They can include anything from teaching students to play the flute and violin, to the more unique Flauta and Guitarra popular. You could even end up teaching a dancing class. Whatever subjects you teach, you can guarantee you’re going to have plenty of fun teaching them.
Whatever your strengths, they will be matched to the right subjects. You have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience in teaching, while also learning more about Cartagena and its local culture.
It is important to keep in mind that the local teachers you are placed with may not speak English. All participants are therefore required to have a sense of initiative. You may even want to learn a little of the local language before heading out on the project. This will make your placement a lot more rewarding as you will be able to interact more with the locals.
While the majority of your time will be spent teaching, you will still have plenty of free time for extracurricular activities. If you want to use your skills to inspire and change lives, this is the perfect opportunity for you.
This project runs from Monday to Friday and you will only be expected to work half-days. Some days you may be required to work in the mornings, while others you may only be required to work in the afternoons.
During a typical day, you will have breakfast before teaching until lunch. After lunch, you will be required to review or take part in school activities. Then you’ll be able to enjoy a little free time before dinner.
So, you will be teaching for approximately 4-6 hours a day. It’s a great way to gain practical experience, while still having time to enjoy your Colombian experience.
Travel and Accommodation
Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and picked up from the airport, before being taken to your accommodation.
Both your travel and accommodation are included in the placement. You will be driven from your accommodation to the placement each morning. Your meals will also be included.
You will be staying in shared accommodation of 1-4 people per room. All bed linen, hot showers and fan will be provided. Your room is lockable and there is free wifi in the public areas.
You will be enjoying your stay in one of the vibrant neighborhoods around Cartagena Colombia, from where you can access numerous sites and attractions, as well as your program very easily via public transport or local taxi.
All participants are expected to be environmentally aware and to use all resources with restraint, especially water, paper and electricity. You will be expected to clean up after yourself, and to play your part to keep the accommodation neat and organised.
