Introduction

Madagascar Is mostly famous for its astounding bio-diversity and stunning scenery, with thousands of species not seen anywhere else on earth. With all these striking natural wonders, it is perhaps easy to forget the people of Madagascar and the fact that almost 70% of the population lives below the national poverty line threshold. While enrolment rates have more than doubled in recent years, the quality of education is very poor with a high rate of grade repetition and dropouts.

This project is run by a non-profit organisation that is working to promote cross-cultural exchanges as a way of community development. It’s works as an alternative to traditional tourism, offering a chance to live and take part in a community and experience it from within rather than observing it from afar.

You are invited to share the lives of the locals in small and isolated village, where the community school project has been up and running since 2011. The school is open to all children of the village and surrounding areas. The main goal is to achieve widespread primary education for all children for free and without financial charge from parents, with high standards in quality and efficiency as well as to stimulate creativity. The community school is non-traditional with an alternative curriculum and methods.

Daily Life

This project gives you a real chance to be involved in the daily life of the community school. You will work as an assistant to the local teacher covering subjects such as English and arts. In addition your presence will be a welcome opportunity for promoting intercultural exchanges. You are encouraged to teach the student to think creatively and to implement self-improvement games into the school day. You will be joining the teachers in the day-to-day schedule school and provide extra support for the kids, helping to open their minds towards different cultures and stimulate their creativity.

During the first part of your trip you will stay in the village where you will share in the everyday life of the locals. You can choose between assisting the teachers in the local school or lend a helping hand in the local health centre, exchanging your knowledge with that of the villagers.

During the second part of your stay you will have the opportunity to go on a road trip around Madagascar, taking in the stunning scenery and enjoying the vibrant culture. During the road trip you will stay with local host families all around the island, or in hotels together with a guide.
