Costs Explained

Introduction

This construction and renovation project gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to autistic children. You will be helping to renovate an autistic children’s centre, improving its conditions and facilities to better fit their needs.

Situated in Split, the centre desperately needs to be expanded in order to accommodate more children expected to join. It is part of a long-term project to help house autistic children when they’re older, as well as provide them with education throughout their life. By partaking in the program, you will be making a real contribution to enhance life for one of the most deserving groups of children in Croatia.

Split is the second-largest city in Croatia, balancing a modern and traditional vibe. It is home to the Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During your time off, you can explore this buzzing city, getting to know the locals and immersing yourself in the rich culture of the city.

The work you will be carrying out during the placement, will vary from light renovation and construction jobs, to hard physical tasks. Therefore, you will need to be fit, healthy and not afraid of hard work in order to carry out the placement. Construction and renovation efforts are largely carried out in organised teams of volunteers. It gives you great practical light renovation experience while working for a worthwhile cause.

This placement would best suit those looking to make a difference to autistic children while putting their existing skills to good use. You also have the opportunity to revisit the centre in the future to see how your work has helped the children and to see the progression of the project.

Daily Life

    1. The placement takes place Monday to Friday and your tasks may change slightly on a daily basis. For the most part, you will be cleaning areas which are due to be renovated, carrying out construction and renovation work alongside the locals and under supervision of your coordinator and building treks and play areas according to advice provided by the staff at the centre.

After finishing for the day, you have the opportunity to explore Split and interact with the locals. You could even choose to learn Croatian to better communicate, and to show your commitment to immersing yourself in the way of life throughout your placement.

As this is a construction and renovation project, it is important to remember that it will be hard work. Although a lot of tasks will only involve light renovation work, there may be particularly strenuous tasks you need to carry out. Therefore, you will need to be fit, healthy and strong to participate in the daily activities of the placement.
