The archipelago Seychelles is a gorgeous tropical refuge once used for coconut farming. The coconut plantations introduced many invasive plant and animal species to the island. This has in turn destroyed the natural habitats of the native wildlife. Our eco-tourism project aims to restore these areas back to their natural glory. This award-winning project is Fair Trade Tourism certified and won Silver at the World Responsible Tourism Awards 2018. In the previous year, the project won Silver at the African Responsible Tourism Awards in the category “Best for Wildlife Conservation.”
Our core team and eco-tourist volunteers help with three critical conservation initiatives: Marine Conservation, Monitoring Endangered Species, and Ecosystem Restoration. Participants in this program are 100% hands-on in all parts of these initiatives. During this project you will not only live on a beautiful private island, but will be part of a project helping to make real difference in island species conservation.
As an eco-tourist you will work 6 days a week, with rest days on Friday. Major activities are focused around endangered and critically endangered turtle conservation. Some tasks you will help with are:
- Daily turtle beach patrols
- Turtle nest egg counts and excavations
- Track and mark Aldabra Giant Tortoises
- Use GPS for data entry and research
- Possible tagging of turtles
- Removal and Cleaning of Alien vegetation
- Planting indigenous plants around the island
- Snorkeling in Coral Reefs for research
While there is plenty of hard work to be done, there is also plenty of time for leisure activities. Take time to explore the island, paddle board, relax on the beach, surf, kayak or hike!
Travel & Accommodation
Participants will need a flight to the Seychelles International Airport. This is on the main island of Mahé. You will then need to catch the 9 A.M. ferry to North Island. This boat is free of charge and will carry you to North Island where we will welcome you. Please ensure that your flight arrives with ample time to catch this early morning boat. Participants may wish to arrive a day early and overnight on Mahé before catching the ferry the next day.
PLEASE NOTE: The ferry to North Island departs on Mondays and Fridays. The ferry from North Island back to Mahe, departs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The staff boat does not run on Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday. Please plan your flights accordingly.
Accommodation during your stay will include three meals a day and housing. Meals are enjoyed with staff and volunteers. Please note that the island does not cater well to vegetarians and vegans. You will need to supplement meals with added protein.
