During this internship, you will be working with a surfing-inspired sustainable development non-profit (NGO) driving the development of poor Peruvian coastal communities through a path of sustainability, improving the quality of life of their inhabitants. The NGO develops educational, infrastructure, environmental, social and economic productivity projects working hand in hand with local communities and with international volunteers/interns. They take a “shared value” approach, working with the private, public, academic sectors and other NGOs, to come up with relevant and lasting sustainable solutions. The approach towards sustainability consists of three pillars:
– Nature conservation;
– Social justice; and
– Economic wellbeing for all.
The NGO currently operates in a coastal northern town and surfing hotspot, which has seen an increase in uncontrolled tourism over the last 15 years. As a result of the town’s lack of infrastructure, lack of communication between stakeholders and lack of integrated development programmes, this tourism is giving rise to various environmental, social and economic risks to the town’s long-term sustainability and wellbeing. The NGO is working to change this through a variety of projects from distinct disciplines, but needs all the help they can get. The organisation runs many different initiatives and at times finds itself thinly stretched. This is an excellent opportunity for you to gain valuable international development experience on how to run an NGO in a developing region, turning you into an agent of change, in a time when you are very much needed.
The Lobitos artisanal fishing community suffers from an organizational problem. Even with a local demand for fish, due to the tourism industry, the fishermen’s produce is being sold in the nearby town of Talara, widely benefitting the income of middle-men instead of their own. The idea of working on a cooperative system to better their own situation has been in the minds of the fishermen for long, but to make sure the venture will succeed and to optimize its impact, market research is necessary.
In mid 2016, an intern from the University of Lima developed qualitative research in order to profoundly describe the value-chain of the fish in Lobitos. His reports uncovered interesting insights that must now be explored quantitatively before beginning design of a business plan. The ultimate goal is to develop a local market, connecting the fishing community to the tourism entrepreneurs and taking advantage of sustainable infrastructure already installed in the fishermen’s community hall by EcoSwell in early 2016.
For this project we require an economics, social sciences, geography or business student or professional to take the research to a new level. Basic to intermediate spanish is recommended for fieldwork purposes.
The ultimate impact for this project is greater income for the fishermen and their families. It will also strengthen the Fishermen’s Guild, which is the only grassroots organization in Lobitos, which will be capable of offering new economic opportunities to the people. This makes the population less dependent on local government jobs and, in doing so, strengthens local democracy.
