As a result of the increase in tourism in the region, not only from international visitors, but also by local visitors from the surrounding towns, Lobitos suffers from an accumulation of litter. Many people from the surrounding towns, visiting Lobitos during the weekends throw litter on the beach. The municipality as a result has hired a large group of cleaners to clean up the beaches after each weekend. Unfortunately, their efforts in mitigating this problem aren’t enough. Despite doing a fantastic job, the cleaners are unable to pick up all the litter that has been thrown on the beach.
As a result, plastic bags, bottles, metal caps and other types of solid wastes are often encountered in the sea and around the beach. This doesn’t only present a health and safety risk for others enjoying the beach, but it also hurts the local fauna, which is extremely rich and diverse (including dolphins, sea lions, turtles, pelicans and many others).
During this internship, you will be working with a surfing-inspired sustainable development non-profit (NGO) driving the development of poor Peruvian coastal communities through a path of sustainability, improving the quality of life of their inhabitants.
The NGO develops educational, infrastructure, environmental, social and economic productivity projects working hand in hand with local communities and with international volunteers/interns. They take a “shared value” approach, working with the private, public, academic sectors and other NGO’s, to come up with relevant and lasting sustainable solutions. The approach towards sustainability consists of three pillars:
– Nature conservation;
– Social justice and
– Economic well-being for all.
The NGO is looking for experienced interns in the field of solid waste management or related fields to help find not just a technical solution, but prompt an educational initiative that will stop people from the neighbouring communities littering. This role will require fluency in Spanish as well as good communication skills and ability to multi-task.
The NGO currently operates in a coastal northern town and surfing hotspot, which has seen an increase in uncontrolled tourism over the last 15 years. As a result of the town’s lack of infrastructure, lack of communication between stakeholders and lack of integrated development programmes, this tourism is giving rise to various environmental, social and economic risks to the town’s long-term sustainability and wellbeing. The NGO is working to change this through a variety of projects from distinct disciplines, but needs all the help it can get.
