Costs Explained

Introduction

This project takes place on the beautiful island province of Palawan whose vivid green mountains contrasts with the surrounding clear blue sea. The project focuses on providing healthcare to the people living in the rural areas far away from the cities’ big hospitals. People turn to the small hospitals located in the district centre and the local healthcare centers for check-ups and treatments. The rural healthcare centers serve more people than the resident doctors and nurses can handle so your contribution will be greatly appreciated and welcomed.

You will get a chance to exchange medical experience and knowledge with the local doctors and nurses and to gain new skills. Working alongside a local doctor or nurse during their daily operations will give you an insight into the functioning of a rural healthcare centre and challenge you to find ways to provide basic health care with limited resources. Another aspect you can be involved in is the organization and participation in health awareness campaigns for children at the local schools.

You will have a challenging and enriching experience and make a valuable contribution!

Daily Life

During the week, each day will start with breakfast at your accommodation. You will then spend mornings and afternoons at either the hospital/health care centre supporting the local staff or spend time with awareness activities in local schools. This placements is aimed at participants with a medical professional background looking to gain a better understanding of rural healthcare in a developing country.

While you will assist and learn from the local staff, you will also have the opportunity to impart your own knowledge and exchange ideas. Your duties will include seeing patients for check-ups and treatments at the hospital or healthcare centre and assisting in running health awareness campaigns at the schools.

Your schedule will run Monday through Friday, leaving your weekends free to explore the many wonders and sights of Palawan. Nearby attractions include Coron Bay, known as one of the finest wreck-diving locations in the world, as well as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park – recently voted as one of the modern 7 wonders of the world.

Travel & Accommodation

Your accommodation is located in the small village of Tigman in the Aberlan district, just outside of Puerto Princesa, the capital of Palawan. You will be sharing comfortable rooms with 4 to 8 other volunteers. All rooms are assigned on a single gender basis and are lockable as well as equipped with fans, bed linens and mosquito nets, however you should provide your own towel. The showers only provide cold water, which is refreshing in the Philippine heat! Wifi is available in public areas, however laundry facilities are limited so you will be expected to wash your own clothes by hand. At all times, you are expected to use all resources responsibly and maintain environmental awareness, including using water and toilet paper sparingly. You will also be expected to clean up after yourself and keep the accommodation clean.

You will be provided with three meals daily, consisting of local Philippine cuisine, including lots of vegetables, meat, egg and rice.

ATMs, Western Union transfers and necessary amenities are available in the nearby town, which is 30 minutes away by car. You can also use local transportation such as jeepneys, buses and vans, which depart every hour for Aberlan or Narra towns.
