- Actively support community development in Vanuatu
- Make a real difference to underprivileged communities
- Keywords: Construction and renovation, Vanuatu placement, Vanuatu construction, renovation project, construction project
This project enables you to use your construction and renovation experience to help support community development in Vanuatu. You will be helping locals to build and renovate public buildings such as community halls and schools.
Taking place in the Piliura and Launamoa areas, your role will largely be to help construct teaching units for the children. Most of the buildings being renovated were damaged in the huge cyclone of 2015. This has left the children in these underprivileged villages without a proper place to learn and gain an education.
Vanuatu is situated in the Pacific and is made up of more than 80 islands. What really stands out is its people. Despite many people living in underprivileged areas and being battered by cyclones, the locals remain laid back, happy and resilient. As you get to know them, it will really help to put your own life into perspective; helping you to appreciate the things you have.
You will help to construct a concrete building for preschools, while also renovating the existing damaged building. This will include tasks such as guttering, upgrading the toilet facilities and renovating the drains. You don’t need any specialist equipment as everything is provided to you.
While previous construction and renovation work experience is ideal, it isn’t a strict requirement. You will be provided with the necessary training from a skilled member of the support team. So, whether you are a beginner or a pro in construction and renovation, this opportunity is a great fit.
You will need to be fit and strong, as the work can be very physically demanding. You must commit to at least one week in the placement, though longer stays are highly encouraged. You can partake in this volunteer opportunity all year round, with new placements starting each week. You could even choose to partake in the placement for a week, then spend additional time on the islands, exploring everything this beautiful part of the world has to offer.
You will be working Monday to Friday and your schedule will remain pretty consistent throughout. However, it may deviate slightly, depending upon weather conditions and any unforeseen circumstances.
Largely, you will be helping to complete a permanent building for the children’s education, as well as supporting the team building gutters and a proper drainage system. It will be hard work but extremely rewarding knowing you are contributing to the education of children who need it most.
If you like to get hands-on and actively make a difference, this placement will definitely suit you.
Travel & Accommodation
Upon arrival at the airport you will be met by a project representative and transferred to the volunteer centre. Please note you will need to arrive on the weekend before the start of your program.
You will be staying in a beautiful house close to the beach. Accommodation is dorm style and you will be staying 2-4 people per room. Your rooms are lockable, and there is wifi in the public areas. You will be provided with all bed lined, mosquito nets, hot showers and a fan.
