Thailand is one of the best destinations in the world when it comes to finding an internship. Major international companies in almost every field have a presence in the country so there are plenty of opportunities for valuable work experience, but the main reason you should choose Thailand for your internship is the country itself.
Bangkok: the real city that never sleeps
Who needs New York when you can have Bangkok? The capital pulsates with life and is filled with contrasts. Brightly coloured temples sit side by side with modern skyscrapers and street-vendors scrape a living outside Michelin starred restaurants. The nightlife in Bangkok is famous too with dizzyingly high rooftop bars as well as live music and sweltering nightclubs.
Food
Thai food is rightly famous throughout the world. If you think you already know your Khao Phat from your Kaeng Pa, a taste of the real thing will soon set you straight. The range of fresh produce in Thailand means that the skilfully cooked meal before you was probably harvested or caught the same day or only the day before. Food is inexpensive too in Thailand; the delicious street food in Bangkok will only set you back a few dollars.
Culture
With a rich heritage going back millennia, Thailand is full of ornate Wats (temples), incredible statues and fascinating archaeological sites. The Wat Phra Kaew with its fantastical golden spires within Bangkok’s Grand Palace is the home of the much revered Emerald Buddha statue, a fine example of the importance of Buddhism to the country’s psyche. Chiang Mai with its plethora of Wats is a wonderful place to explore this aspect of the culture, while the cave shrines of Kanchanaburi and Phetchaburi are truly remarkable.
The great outdoors
From the infamous full moon parties on Koh Pha Ngan to the chilled-out paradise of Koh Chang, Thailand seems to have more beaches than people! Despite its ever-increasing popularity on every traveller’s tick list, there are still undisturbed stretches of white sand to be found as well as a beach resort to suit every kind of visitor. With hundreds of islands throughout the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea a beach trip can be turned into a tropical sailing, scuba or snorkelling adventure. The year-round sunshine of Thailand means that it’s almost always beach weather there too!
The extensive tropical jungles of Thailand offer a completely different perspective on the country from the beaches and temples. Indigenous wildlife includes Asian Elephants, Clouded Leopards and Indochinese Tigers, making Thailand one of the most exciting wildlife destinations in Asia. Trekking in the northern hills around Chiang Mai can include rafting trips and homestays in the local villages.
A warm welcome to a wonderful country
Thailand is known as The Land of Smiles, and from the moment you step off the plane, you’ll know you made the right choice interning there. With colourful events throughout the year, including water fights throughout the Songkran (New Year) festival in April, spooky goings on in the Phi Ta Khon ghost festival in June and the delicious Food Festival in September, your only problem will be finding the time to experience all that the country has to offer!
