This project aims at enhancing the health of the local population by identifying the most common diseases in the area, getting information from doctors, spreading awareness in schools and once a month conducting health check-up camps in villages. Most of the rural population have little or no knowledge of hygiene and diet, which causes many diseases such as high blood sugar & cholesterol and hypertension. Other common diseases include skin eruptions/lesions, urinary infections, gum disease and heart diseases.
The healthcare education project needs both skilled medical and healthcare professionals as well as less experienced volunteers who are interested in teaching basic first-aid and personal hygiene. Qualified professionals can conduct health camps and dental check-ups and can offer useful guidance on the project’s development. Volunteers can educate people in simple hygienic techniques such as washing hands, brushing teeth and general cleanliness and can offer support in running healthcare campaigns in local schools.
Contribute towards the prevention of many avoidable health problems and easily communicable diseases while enjoying the beautiful Fiji.
Your first week will be an introductory experience to the island, this is compulsory for all trips to Fiji, and is the best way to get to know the people, culture and nature before starting your volunteer experience.
In the morning of your first day, you will meet with a local doctor who will explain all the various medical aspects and needs of the local community. Later on you will go to the local government schools and take part in an awareness campaign, teaching health and hygiene to children of various ages, teaching first aid and other health related programs.
On the last Wednesday of every month, together with the local team of doctors, a general health check-up camp is organized for the local community. Free medicines and treatments are made available to everybody.
Every Friday the activity plan is confirmed. The program can change depending on the school plans and activities as well as weather and local conditions. The working day is around 4 hours.
