Introduction
The Forest Conservation program is dedicated to developing and implementing projects and initiatives aimed at promoting the ecological recovery of degraded areas. Central to its mission is the restoration of native forests and the reintroduction of native species into these ecosystems. An integral aspect of the program is the active involvement of the local community, ensuring that community members are engaged and participate in the conservation efforts. By working together with the community, the program strives to achieve its overarching goal of enhancing ecological sustainability and fostering the recovery of degraded landscapes.
Daily Life
Forests and natural parks play a crucial role in preserving ecosystem functions, including acclimatization, resource conservation, erosion control, water regulation, and carbon sequestration. The Forest Conservation program is committed to restoring degraded areas through native forest and species restoration, with active community involvement. These initiatives aim to enhance natural heritage, promote biodiversity, and restore ecological functions, primarily through native forest restoration.
You will work alongside the field team to study and learn about each area, undertaking various tasks based on the season. These tasks include controlling invasive species, planting diverse species, maintaining planted areas, protecting biodiversity, and managing pedestrian trails. Most activities are located in a natural park near Lisbon, with travel time of about an hour using public transport.
Additionally, volunteers participate in monthly field trips lasting 2 to 5 days, visiting different parts of Portugal. These trips offer opportunities to explore other areas and contribute to larger-scale reforestation efforts in degraded regions. Volunteers collaborate with local volunteers, coordinators, and community members to create visible impacts and raise awareness about the importance of networking. Get ready for this adventure!
