Introduction

Join us in our partnership with the local Indonesian government, Papuan Communities, and stakeholders, as we embark on a mission to protect the vibrant coral reefs and uplift the communities that depend on them.

Our collaboration is fueled by a shared passion for making a real difference, recognizing that preserving marine ecosystems goes hand in hand with empowering local communities and fostering sustainable practices. Together, we are committed to not only conducting research and implementing Marine Protected Areas but also to educating and alleviating poverty for lasting impact.

At the heart of our Raja Ampat project lies grassroots action, where every volunteer has the opportunity to witness firsthand the positive change they contribute to. Our goals are ambitious yet achievable:

– Dive into marine surveys using the Reef Check methodology, gathering crucial data to guide conservation efforts and empower local decision-makers.
– Create a comprehensive Manta Ray Identification (ID) database through thrilling underwater expeditions, sharing insights with our partners to safeguard these majestic creatures.
– Combat outbreaks of Crown of Thorns Starfish (COTs) through hands-on survey and removal dives, protecting coral reefs from destruction.
– Educate and inspire through environmental programs, teaching sustainable fishing techniques and highlighting the economic benefits of Marine Protected Areas.
– Transform lives and communities through our holistic approach, from education and healthcare to waste management and renewable energy initiatives.
– Foster a culture of entrepreneurship, steering communities away from destructive practices towards sustainable livelihoods.

Together, we’re not just protecting coral reefs; we’re building a brighter future for Raja Ampat and its people. Join us on this meaningful journey and be part of the change you wish to see in the world.

Daily Life

The Science Training Program (STP) offers volunteers a unique opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of coral reef biology and ecology. Through classroom-style lessons and hands-on diving experiences, volunteers learn to identify coral, invertebrates, fish, and plant species commonly found here and across the Indo-Pacific region.

Whether you’re an aspiring marine biologist, a passionate diver, or simply curious about marine ecosystems, the science program caters to all levels of interest. Volunteers often find that their diving experiences are enriched after participating in the program, as they gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the marine life they encounter.

The STP comprises a 1-2 week “Reef Check” course, where volunteers are equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to identify reef species. Classroom sessions are followed by in-water lessons, where volunteers dive alongside trained staff, honing their identification skills and discussing observations and challenges.

Upon completion of the science training program, volunteers have the opportunity to join our reef survey and monitoring teams. By participating in research dives across spectacular coral reefs, volunteers contribute to the organization’s mission of assisting local government and communities in conserving and protecting these invaluable ecosystems.

Your day starts with breakfast at 7 am, followed by either two survey dives or participation in community projects, depending on weather conditions and guidance from local dive guides/boat crew. The Community Officer organizes community projects, focusing on education, improving quality of life, and poverty alleviation.

After each survey dive, you’ll record data onto dive slates and later enter it into our database. Lunch is served from 12:00 to 12:30, followed by the opposite activity from the morning session: if you worked on community projects, you’ll undertake survey dives in the afternoon, and vice versa.

Dinner is served at 7:00 pm, followed by a brief debriefing on the day’s activities. The rest of the evening is yours to relax, enjoy a cold beer, and reflect on the day’s experiences, whether it’s the incredible marine life you encountered or the friendships you formed with villagers, all while witnessing the breathtaking sunset off our jetty.
