Introduction

Join the Refugee and Migrant Support Program in Athens, Greece! As the capital of Greece, Athens has become a refuge for diverse and unique individuals fleeing conflict in neighboring countries. Over the last few years, the city has seen a significant influx of refugees, many of whom have been separated from their families during their journey. Various organizations have established host centers where refugees are placed until they can reunite with their families or complete their asylum-seeking procedures.

In this program, you will visit a local refugee host center where you will engage with teenagers, young people, and adults in informal ways. Your role will be to create a comfortable and safe space for them to express themselves through sports, arts, or simple social interactions, allowing them to connect with each other and with you. The aim is to help them spend their free time in meaningful and valuable ways.

It’s important to remember that you will be interacting daily with individuals who may be dealing with PTSD, teenagers who have never attended school or experienced a safe family environment, and victims of torture. Building trust may take time, and patience is key to creating a supportive atmosphere.

Daily Life

As a volunteer, your role is crucial in creating a supportive, safe environment for refugee youth to express themselves through sports and arts. You’ll foster meaningful connections, encourage active participation, and ensure they spend their free time engaged in valuable, enriching activities.

Your tasks may vary:

  • Sports Activities: Conduct sports sessions, train participants, and promote healthy lifestyles through physical activities.
  • Arts and Crafts: Facilitate art workshops, music sessions, drama classes, and other creative activities that provide a positive outlet for self-expression.
  • Café Operations: Prepare and serve food and drinks in the social café, ensuring a friendly and supportive environment for refugee children and adults.
  • Build Connections: Engage with refugees through conversation and activities, helping them build trust and feel more integrated into the community.

Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be greeted and transported to our project.

You will be housed in a centrally located, dormitory-style hostel in the vibrant heart of Athens. This accommodation offers the perfect mix of comfort, community, and cultural immersion. Situated just steps from the nearest metro station and a short drive from the famous Acropolis, the hostel serves as an ideal base for your volunteering journey.
Dive into the lively neighborhood, filled with amenities like supermarkets, charming coffee shops, lively bars, accessible ATMs, and various transportation options. Accommodations are cozy and shared with up to eleven others per room, each equipped with air conditioning for comfort, and bedding and towels are provided. While staff clean the facilities throughout the week, volunteers are responsible for maintaining the tidiness of their rooms. Personal lockers are provided for each volunteer.
The hostel’s communal spaces, which include a spacious dining hall/lounge, a fully equipped shared kitchen, a welcoming backyard, and a large terrace, celebrate the diverse cultures and stories of those who stay there. This vibrant environment promotes social inclusion and sustainability, offering a warm atmosphere where guests from around the world can connect. The hostel also provides job opportunities to migrants and refugees in Athens, reflecting its commitment to community empowerment. The decor, featuring charming second-hand furnishings, supports local and ethical businesses and emphasizes sustainable living.
Free WiFi is available at the volunteer accommodation, though the signal may be weaker in some areas. Additionally, many cafes and restaurants in the vicinity offer WiFi.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to participate in a guided city tour, receiving insider tips to help them discover the best of what the city has to offer.
